For one reason or another, performing half-hearted dance routines to music in short-form video clips has become a new form of entertainment our species seems to have an insatiable appetite for. It has also helped launch some artists into the stratosphere — like country music star Walker Hayes. The Monument artist recently released a catchy, upbeat track called “Fancy Like” from his new EP Country Stuff (which is out now). In the viral TikTok he shared of himself busting moves with his daughter Lela to the song, there are plenty of body rolls and hip swinging to admire. It was a cute father-daughter moment that quickly became a hit.
The catchy tune and the snazzy dance soon took over TikTok with copycat videos. The trend even landed him on late night tv with appearances on Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on TODAY. It’s safe to say the Fancy Like dance has changed Walker Hayes’ life.
The hit song has climbed up the country charts and is close to breaking the Top 10. It’s also taken over Spotify’s Global Viral chart with thousands of videos featuring the song. The snazzy tune has also earned the Monument artist an endorsement deal with Applebee’s and helped bring back the restaurant chain’s Oreo shake. The whole experience has been a big lesson for Hayes. In an interview with CMT, he revealed that learning the dance with Lela was a way for them to bond during their time in quarantine.
