As of June 2021, country singer Walker Hayes had only one Top 10 single under his belt, and even that was a flop when it hit the charts in 2017. Now, he’s laughing at all the misfortune that came before his breakthrough song “Fancy Like,” which soared to the top of every sales and streaming chart (and spent six months there) thanks to a viral dance video.
It all started when the ‘Only In A Small Town’ singer had some downtime on his hands while working from home during the pandemic and found himself scrolling through TikTok. He noticed that dancing routine videos set to music were trending, and figured making one up would be fun. So, he grabbed his daughter Lela and shot a video of the duo on their front porch to the song. It went viral, and now the dad-daughter dance has racked up millions of views.
The popularity of the clip has encouraged others to show off their fancy like moves online, including Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on NBC’s TODAY. The morning show hosts recently took on the challenge, and although they stumbled through their dance, the results were surprisingly endearing.
In a video on their Instagram, the two women admit that they don’t know much about TikTok, but they still managed to pull off the fad with some impressive footwork. The clip also showcases a few of the other celebrities who’ve taken on the “Fancy Like” challenge, including actor Candace Cameron Bure and staff members and penguins at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium.
