Hip hop dance is a broad term that sums up many different styles of dancing done primarily to hip hop music. Some of these include krumping, breaking, popping and locking.

In a purely musical sense, hip hop is where beats of varying speeds meet rap, which consists of chanting in rhymed phrases. This gives the music a very rhythmic and fast quality, which makes it perfect for dancing. Hip hop also has a culture that surrounds it and is based on the idea of youth empowerment and self-expression. This is a great foundation for a dance style that requires a lot of confidence and freedom to do well.

The history of hip hop dance starts in the 60s and 70s when street parties, or block parties, were popular as a way for young people to get out of their troubled neighborhoods. Street gangs like the Black Spades, of which Afrika Bambaataa was a member before becoming a famous musician, were important centers for hip hop dance and culture. Gang activity started to decline as the popularity of hip hop grew.

Hip Hop became known worldwide, and groups from outside of America began forming and competing in international competitions. These competitions helped to solidify hip hop dance as a form of performance art. It was around this time that dance teams such as the Jabbawockeez, Quick Crew and Mos Wanted Crew emerged. During this period, the style of hip hop dance was evolving quickly and new moves were created at a rapid pace.
